Every day, communities around New Zealand are working hard to improve our environmental taonga. These are our unsung heroes. The Community Environment Fund empowers New Zealanders to do more. It supports people to strengthen partnerships, raise awareness of issues and increase educational opportunities. The fund provides $3 million every year to community groups.
Successful applicants have included a community project to build a pest-proof fence for the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary. It has also supported volunteer environment reporting projects, the restoration of the mussel reefs in the Hauraki Gulf, control of wilding pines in the Waimakariri Basin and a project to restore indigenous biodiversity in coastal sand dune environments.
